Designs for courses in ESP/ EAP are inevitably intertwined with the question of "needs analysis" since meeting the "needs" of the students is closely aligned with the purpose of the course. It can be broken down into three elements:

  1. the present situation (including some kind of placement test)
  2. the learning situation (how to work effectively in the context)
  3. target language use (future "needs" as they appear to expert people in the field, or as they are felt by students for example)
