There are plenty of promising avenues in this topic: English for Academic Purposes, Data driven learning (which makes use of corpus linguistics and considering English together with other study skills. There's an argument that students with a different first language can be particularly helped by looking at their reading with the help of genre analysis or Legitimation Code Theory.
