Post by Andy Matuschak on the “The Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer” from the novel The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. There are attractive features to this device, for example the way it provides appropriate scaffolding for learner research, with plenty of room for discovery. But also serious lacunae, such as the learner’s isolation from other people and the lack of any external purpose defined by the learner. (There’s an authoritarian purpose imposed by the designer of the Primer.)
